Chicago Navy Pier Dowdle Puzzle
-
Construction on one of five proposed Chicago Municipal Piers began in 1914, but only one was completed. It was intended to be used for a variety of public purposes, but World War I prevented that from happening. The pier was used by Navy, Army, and Red Cross personnel from 1917 to 1918.
After the war, the pier, now known as the Navy Pier, became a hub of activity in the Windy City. During the Roaring Twenties, more than 3 million people visited each year. The World's Fair provided a steady flow of visitors throughout the 1930s.
Then war broke out once more. The pier was used by the United States Navy throughout WWII; after all, it is called Navy Pier. The University of Chicago took over from 1946 to 1965, but it was then unused for a decade. Exhibition halls and events began the resuscitation in 1976, and after renovations in the early 1990s, the Navy Pier was once again a major Chi-town attraction.
Today, the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel and Pier Park, as well as museums, exhibition halls, vendors, shops, sightseeing cruises, and tall ships, call it home. Looking in from Lake Michigan, Eric's painting captures the beautiful cityscape as a backdrop for the historic and wonderful Navy Pier.
